The Berenstain Bears and The Biggest Brag Review

image obtained from Amazon

About the book

The Berenstain Bears and The Biggest Brag is about Brother and Sister Bear and how they like to be the best at everything. These siblings end up bragging about everything they have accomplished. Despite their parents telling them that bragging and boasting is not loving each other, Brother and Sister Bear don't listen. One day they end up getting into a huge bragging contest on what they see in the clouds. Thankfully, Grizzly Gramps intervenes and teaches the bears about "Where there is strife, there is pride."

My thoughts

The Berenstain Bears and The Biggest Brag is a delightful book to help teach your children about pride and the problems of bragging. The illustrations really captured my kids' attention and they loved the images that Brother and Sister Bear saw in the clouds. I really liked how the author was able to include the Bible throughout the book to teach about love and strife. It is a perfect way to show your kids how the Holy Bible is an important part of the life.

At the very end of the book, the author includes a page titled "Activities and Questions from Brother and Sister Bear". This page provides questions that you can discuss with your child such as "What exactly does it mean to brag?" And, it provides activities that you can do with your children. I really liked the activity where you teach your children that it's okay to be proud of the talents that God has given you because those talents allow you to serve others. We really loved this book because it allows you to learn how to become a better person while enjoying a delightful story.

My thoughts

Flashlights are so handy especially in the area I live since the power goes out frequently. However, I hate how my flashlights never seem to work or they just don't provide a lot of light. Thankfully, I found the solution to fix that problem. The 3-in-1 Cree LED Flashlight with Magnetized Base is an an amazing flashlight.

Upon receiving the flashlight, I was impressed with the material that it was made of. It does not have a cheap quality about it! The flashlight is built really well and is about 8 inches long so it isn't too big or too small. It is the perfect size for me.

The flashlight is very easy to use. The first button click turns on the CREE LED which is the standard flashlight beam that is incredibly bright. It definitely lit up most of my living room. The second button click turns on the white LED on the side of the flashlight. This produces a lot of light which is perfect if you are working on the car because the flashlight can be attached to anything magnetic to be held up. And the 3rd button click turns on the Red LED which is perfect for car emergencies because it blinks on and off.

I love how the flashlight has LEDs on the side and is magnetized. This makes car projects so easy. My husband has enjoyed having extra light when he works on the car.

The flashlight is right size to fit inside your glove compartment so you can always have a flashlight for roadside emergencies. I have also used the flashlight for projects where I just need a little more light because I can attach the flashlight to something metal and use the lights on the body of the flashlight.

I have been really impressed with this flashlight because it is so versatile. You definitely won't be disappointed with this flashlight!

Epigenetics Review & Giveaway (#begreen, #giftguide)

About the book

The book EPIGENETICS is a global update of Darwin's book The Origin of Species. There is no other book that embraces all of the events (political, socially, biologically, nutritionally, chemically and genetically) that have been spawned since the publication of The Origin of Species by Darwin more than 100 years ago.

EPIGENETICS is required reading for the very survival of Americans and yes all of humanity - modern man has bet on the wrong horse to save them from disease and pestilence - the medical system has failed us fearfully. It is predictable that this book will impact the world of the everyday man, science, politics, social engineering and medicine to the same degree that Darwin's The Origin of Species did more than 100 years ago.

This book will be welcomed and enjoyed by religious leaders, community leaders, educators, parents and students of biology, nutrients and genetics in all forms. The general public will obviously be the larger market.

Dr. Wallach has been lecturing 300 times per year to national and international audiences for more than 20 years. Dr.s Wallach and Ma have 10 best- selling books that were self-published (the best known Dead Doctors Don't Lie -hundreds of thousands sold - a favorite with Amazon.com) and dozens of CD titles - the most listened toof which is Dead Doctors Don't Lie which has sold just short of 200 million copies - Dr. Wallach's audience is very large and very loyal.

Historically, Wallach's audiences range from 100 to 500 people, however, in the last 10 years enlarged by simulcast technology his audiences can range into the tens of thousands. For 18 years, Dr. Wallach has been the host of two one hour interactive radio talk shows that air M-F from 12:00 - 2:00 PST. Since 2011 Wallach has also been allied with the GCN radio network that has 1,342 stations.

About the authors

Dr Wallach was born and raised in Missouri , attended the University of Missouri, where he received a Bachelor's degree in Science of Agriculture. Dr. Wallach 's research has resulted in the publication of more than 70 peer review and refereed journal articles in the fields of nutrition and pharmaceutical research, and he has made major contributions to eight multi-authored text and reference books on these subjects.

Dr.Ma Lan was educated in the Peoples Republic of China. Dr. Ma Lan received her M.D. from Beijing Medical University, took her residency in Peoples Hospital, Beijing and was a staff surgeon at the Canton Air Force Hospitals for eight years; she received her M.S. (Master of Science) in transplant immunology from Zhong-Shan Medical University, Canton, Peoples Republic of China. As with all Chinese doctors, Dr. Ma Lan is also trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Dr. Schrauzer is Professor Emeritus (UCSD), researcher, inventor, and author. He is the Director of the San Diego-based Biological Trace Element Research Institute. Gerhard N. Schrauzer studied chemistry at the University of Munich, where he received Ph.D. degree with summa cum laude in 1956 and became a member of its Science Faculty in 1963. He came to the United States in 1964 and in 1966 accepted a position as Full Professor at the University of California, San Diego.

My thoughts

As you probably know by now, I am trying to do everything I can to be healthy. I feel it is really important to watch what you consume. When I heard about Epigenetics, I wanted to read it.

This book is very long and geared more to be an academic book. The first several chapters were full of a lot of history, and it was a little boring. I wanted to learn more about medical history and knowledge instead of ancient history and witchcraft. The witchcraft was talked about because it was used as an analogy to how our current medical system is doing a "witchhunt" on alternative medical practices. I liked that analogy, but I wish the authors would have cut the chapter way down!

I also felt that the book didn't flow well. It would go in depth about a scientist and then talk a little bit about a statement on how to prevent a certain illness. So there were many times where I was wondering why certain things were included and other things were not. I feel if the book was edited so it wasn't so choppy, then it would be even better.

Epigenetics is a fascinating read about how a lot of the problems society is afflicted with is caused by mineral and element deficiencies. Wallach frequently says."You are what you absorb".  He goes on to say that people with pica, or the munchies, are eating a lot of food because they are craving minerals that their bodies need. I truly believe in this because I have noticed when I get munchies, I look at what I have been eating, and I can see how I am missing certain vitamins and minerals from my diet. Mineral deficiency problems occur a lot in areas where the soil is deficient. That makes so much sense!

Towards the back of the book, the authors discuss many illnesses, diseases, and conditions and what deficiencies cause them. I think this is a great resource for people to try treating their health problems because there are many times where doctors can't help them. The book also goes into depth about the 90 essential vitamins and minerals you need and how they help keep you healthy.

As much as I agree with health problems being linked to mineral deficiencies, I don't really think every single condition is caused my deficiencies. I just didn't agree with Wallach on all his claims. Further studies and research will need to be done. So please keep that in mind and don't blame yourself if your child has a disease or if you have a disease.

Anyways, this book is definitely a good read and you will learn a lot about how to keep yourself healthy!

Ozeri Green Earth Frying Pan Review (#begreen, #giftguide, #earthpan)

About the product
  • Unlike other ceramic pans, the Ozeri Green Earth Pan utilizes GREBLON - an ultra-safe ceramic coating from Germany which is 100% PTFE and PFOA free.
  • Innovative textured pan surface delivers enhanced heat distribution and superior non-stick performance without ever releasing harmful fumes or toxins.
  • Features a scratch-resistant 100 percent ceramic coating that is super easy to clean.
  • Made out of durable heavy-gauge die-cast aluminum with no heavy metals or harmful chemicals.
  • Boasts a comfortable heat resistant silicon coated handle and a magnetized induction stove safe base for rapid heat transfer.

My thoughts

I love cooking; however, sometimes I really hate all the dirty pans and dishes. The worst dish to clean is from scrambling eggs. My eggs tend to leave a think film on the pan that takes some time to get it off. When I read about the Ozeri Green Earth Frying Pan I was excited to see if it would work with my scrambled eggs. I wanted to try this pan because it is made from a ceramic coating and is free of PTFE and PFOA. I want a pan that has a non-stick coating that isn't toxic.

Before you use the pan, you have to prep it. Basically you rub oil (I used coconut oil) into the pan to prep the pan's surface. After I wiped out the excess oil, I was ready to cook some eggs. I poured only the mixture of eggs into the pan.

While I cooked the eggs, I noticed the pan's textured surface since part of the eggs would get stuck in the surface. The egg did come off, but I would have preferred a smooth surface.

Here is how the pan looks like after the eggs are done:

I put some water in the pan, wiped out the egg, and this is what it looks like:

Pretty impressive in my opinion. I didn't have to scrub the pan or let it soak for hours to remove any chunks of eggs. It all came off so easy.

I have used this Ozeri Green Earth Frying pan as my go to breakfast pan. I haven't been disappointed at all with the results. Thankfully, the textured surface hasn't cause any huge problems with food getting stuck in the design. I still think the pan would be "perfect" if the surface was smooth. Anyways, I would totally recommend this product to my family and friends because it is nice and actually has a non-stick coating that works.

Week of the Letter V (#preschool)

I hope everyone got some fun ideas from last week's letter! Now I am going to share what I did to teach my little kiddo about the letter "V". I got a lot of inspiration for future preschool lessons from doing this letter. One such inspiration will be doing an artist of the week.

Monkey has shown such intense interest in art that I want to encourage him in this area. He listened so attentively during the Vincet van Gogh lesson that I knew I found something he really liked. I am going to start planning these lessons and then I will share them with you! Anyways, here is what we did for the letter V.

Letter of the Week Project

Because it is winter time, I decided that the letter of the week project should be something to bring some cheer into the house. So Monkey created "V is for Violet Vase".

How to make the violet vase:
  1. Cut out a letter V from purple construction paper. I just drew a big "V" out with a pencil and then I cut it out of the paper.
  2. Cut thin strips of green construction paper. They can be any length because they will make up the flower stalks and branches.
  3. Cut out flower shapes from  various pieces of colored construction paper. I used purple, yellow, red, and blue. Again I just winged it since I was short on time (trust me, your kiddos aren't going to care if the flowers aren't picture perfect).
  4. Let your kiddo get creative and glue everything on.
I just absolutely loved how this project turned out! And, Monkey had so much gluing all the flowers into the vase.

Reading/Writing

I introduced the letter "v" by reading My "v" Book. This series of books really engages Monkey and teaches him about other words that start with the letter "v". We read it each day and practice identifying the letter "v" and saying its sound.

I made two worksheets to practice the letter "v" using my StartWrite program. I am going to be perfectly honest with you and tell you that Monkey really doesn't enjoy writing or learning things about the English language. He enjoys doing things with his hands so I am brainstorming ways to teach him the letters in a more creative way. Anyways, I do the worksheets so I can teach Monkey about language and why it is important. I know someday he will learn the value. Thankfully, he does cooperate for a few minutes and then it is back to coloring.

The worksheets are good because he is making progress on identifying the letters and points out other letters on the sheet.

Science

Because Monkey hasn't done the volcano experiment, I just knew I had to do it with him. However, I wanted a quick way to make a volcano without a huge mess. And, I found the perfect way!!

How to make a volcano:
*note: I got inspired to design the volcano this way from The Ramblings of a Crazy Woman.
  1. Get a plastic cup and tape it inside a bowl. I used disposable so I didn't have to worry about Monkey breaking anything (he gets really excited about science activities)
  2. Place the contraption inside a brown paper lunch bag horizontally. Tape the opening underneath the bowl. Now you have a volcano.
  3. Cut out a circle on the top of the bag so the volcano has an opening.
  4. Place some baking soda and red food coloring inside the cup
  5. Pour some vinegar into measuring cup so it is easier for your kiddo to pour the vinegar into the volcano.
  6. Pour the vinegar into the cup with the baking soda and red dye (note: I didn't measure the amounts because it just isn't needed...if there is baking soda left, then pour more vinegar into the cup).
  7. Watch the chemical reaction.
  8. Repeat.
For older kids, you can go more into the chemical reaction of baking soda and vinegar, limiting reactants, etc. But with Monkey, I just discussed the chemical reaction and explained why it bubbled (production of carbon dioxide). He really loved the volcano and we did this many times.

I even found a clip of an erupting volcano on YouTube so Monkey could see what a volcano in real life is like. This project is so easy and fun so be sure to do it!

Art

My husband got his education in art, and I want to make sure my kids appreciate art. I was really excited when I came across this blog, Practical Pages, because she provides a lot of art activities that correspond with an artist! This is exactly what I want to do now.

First Monkey and I had a short conversation about Vincent van Gogh. I pulled up pictures on my computer so I could talk about this artist and some of his paintings. Monkey was so attentive that I was completely shocked. My little boy has tons of energy and he is learning how to use it properly (I think I found a great outlet). I printed off a tracing of Starry Night (provided by Practical Pages). Then Monkey got to paint the picture however he felt. It was such a neat experience watching him focus so much on his painting!

Then we did some some vegetable painting! I just found whatever I had in my house so Monkey used onions, celery, celery leaves and potatoes to paint. This was so much fun because he just got to be creative with what vegetables he wanted to use and with what colors. (note: Potatoes are fun to use because you are cut designs into them using a plastic design and then stamp the designs onto the page).

Monkey was the one who got the idea to paint using the celery leaves and I was impressed with his control at dabbing the leaves on the page.

I just love all these paintings!

My thoughts

The first thing I noticed about the Lemon Essential Oil was the size of the bottle. It is huge!  When I opened the bottle, I immediately smelled fresh lemons. It was such a wonderful and soothing smell.

This lemon essential oil is so versatile. I love adding it my homemade cleaning solution because it provides a lovely smell to everything I clean which is really good because I use a lot of vinegar to clean my house. Another reason I love to clean with this oil is that it is antiseptic! I have used it for a lot of household cleaning tasks and the bottle looks like I haven't used any. It is so concentrated that a little bit really goes a long way.

I also really love the dropper that they provide because it allows me to get exactly how much of the lemon essential oil without getting too much or too little. Other bottles have control flow caps that really don't work so you end up getting way too much. But, you don't have to worry about that with this bottle!

I really have been enjoying my lemon essential oil, and I totally recommend getting this product for your household.

1x Pink Lunch Bag (Large) 6L x 6H x 10W (inches)

1x Pink Lunch Bag (Small) 5L x 5H x 7.5W (inches)

My thoughts

I am trying to lower my landfill fingerprint and save money. I don't like the idea of buying things that are intended to be thrown away. That is why I made the switch to cloth diapers and cloth wipes. I am hoping to make the switch to mama cloth.I am also in the process of making my own set of kitchen cloth towels to be used to wipe up spills, etc. because I hate using disposable towels.

My husband has his own reusable lunch bag set to take to work. Because I work at home, I never purchased one. However, there have been times where I do picnics at the park or lunch at a friends' house and it would be nice to be able to have a reusable lunch bag. So you can only imagine my excitement when I saw the Hango lunch bag set of two sizes. I wanted pink to be different.

I love how the set includes two sizes because there are times where I just want a smaller bag and times where I just want a larger bag. I absolutely love the way they look!

Here is how the large Hango lunch bag looks like on the inside:

The big Hango lunch bag is available to accommodate a lot more food. Here is a lunch I packed for me when I had to be away from my house. I still had room left over to pack more food! I love how spacious the bag is without being super ginormous.

Here is how the small Hango lunch bag looks like on the inside:

I have had lots of fun testing these lunch bags out. The smaller one is perfect for the snacks you want to take with you. It also works really well for baby bottles which is important to me since I am a breastfeeding mom.

Bottom line: these Hango lunch bags are something you won't regret buying for yourself or a friend. I love mine and use them all the time!
