Oven Baked Fries

Fries are my weakness. I love salt, and I love the crispiness of the fries. However, they are not a really healthy snack for many reasons. I have tried making oven baked fries for several months now, and I have finally found a method that turns out beautiful and delicious fries that make you want more! My husband and kiddos love these fries and they keep asking for them all the time.

Oven baked fries take longer to make, but they are so worth it. The flavor is so much better and you don't get all that grease!

Oven Baked Fries Recipe
*note: recipe with pictures can be found at the end of the post
Ingredients
  • 4 medium potatoes (russet, sweet, etc)
  • 1 -1.5 tbs olive oil
  • Seasoning (pepper, salt, onion powder, garlic salt, Parmesan....whatever you want!)
Steps
the magic pan that makes perfect fries every time
*note: I make wider fries because that is how my husband likes them. If you do smaller fries, then the amount of cooking time will be be in approximately half.
*helpful hint: I find that a pan with holes cooks the best because it allows air to flow all around the fries (when I have used a regular baking sheet, the fries become stuck to the pan and are not crispy)

  1. Peel potatoes (you can leave the skin on if you like).
  2. Cut potatoes into 1/2 inch width wedges. I like to use a french fry cutter because it makes the job go by so much quicker (and the french fry cutter is great for making mashed potatoes because all the potatoes are the same size so they cook evenly).
  3. Preheat oven to 450 F.
  4. Put the raw fries into a large bowl. Cover them with water and let them soak in water for 5-10 minutes to remove starch. This step helps the potatoes to cook better.
  5. Drain the water. Leave the raw fries in the bowl.
  6. Pour the olive oil onto the potatoes and toss the raw fries in the oil until evenly coated. I use my hands for this process.
  7. Sprinkle seasoning onto the raw fries and toss again.
  8. Spread some oil onto your cooking pan. This helps prevent the fries from sticking to the pan.
  9. Put the raw fries onto the pan.
  10. Let the fries cook for about 45 minutes. About half way through the cooking time, take the fries out and flip them over with a spatula.
  11. Enjoy.
  12. Repeat next night. And then try this recipe using sweet potatoes and yams because they make delicious fries too :)
